Overqualified and underwhelming
On 26/6/07 16:07, "benn/ neoco" wrote on ChinWag [uk-netmarketing]: Overqualified and underwhelming - system fails students!
We split up and headed out to all corners, looking for someone with a flair for creative and digital and that was the issue. I can count the number of websites I actually saw on screen on ONE HAND! Some of these did not even work. I don't mean the buttons did not link I mean they did not even load (on a local machine). Personally, I think there is a massive issue, when we have such a skills shortage online and yet the colleges, unis, etc are just vomiting out thousands of students who know FA about digital and have not been made aware of it (except for the Flash or DreamWeaver lesson that just puts them off).
Why is digital treated as the bastard brother to traditional creative? Read more... or visit: http://chinwag.com/uk-netmarketing/
A really wonderful scheme

Hello Sophie
Unfortunately even though I've built a site, this was using a template. I have a basic understanding of Fireworks and Flash but probably have only scanned through Dreamweaver so I'm guessing I'll not be up to par for these courses. Shame.
I'd like to say I think this programme is a really wonderful scheme. It's not often you find courses in the graphics or web industry with a priority to develop women. Allocating a budget for childcare really shows your understanding and commitment to this. Impressive!
Good luck with it all and I hope you turn out some superb webers!
Regards Em
UPDATE: I reassured Emma, she would have a chance to get on the course, but she had just found a new job that will keep her busy in August, so she won't be on the course. Congratulations and all the best with your project.
Jakob Nielsen: 1% between men and women’s behaviour
What about gender? Are there big differences between what men and women want? Yes, but funnily enough, not much. For most things, we’ve seen differences of around 1% between men and women’s behaviour, but there are gaps of 100% between how computers and companies internally think about some things and how customers think about them. That’s in terms of behaviour – in terms of content, there are obvious differences, but in terms of how you would do your navigation or photographs, those things are the same.
It’s still quite a male-dominated industry though. Has enough research been done into how sites should be designed for women? That’s true, but I think the usability field has more women in it than men, for whatever reason. We have a majority of women in our company. More importantly though, in our studies, we always try and get an equal percentage of women in. The only big differences we see between users are age differences. Senior citizens are different from the mainstream, which we see as people from 18-65. Children are very different from teenagers and grown-ups and old people

Flash Goddess of the year: Design is very androgynous
Winner of the 1st Flash Goddess Award shares her thoughts on gender and the web industry.
Do you find it challenging to be a woman in a male dominated industry? Hmmm I don't find gender an issue. It's a challenge just working in this industry!
Many women I've interviewed feel it's a challenge to connect with other female Flash designers for support and community. Is this your experience? I haven't tried to consciously connect with any female flash designers outside of the work place, so it's hard to comment. If it was at work, it's quite interesting to see that usually it's the guys that are more into exploring new animation techniques, cool effects and stuff like that.
Do you feel there is an intrinsic difference between male and female Flash creations? Not really. I think design itself is very androgynous.
